MU: 2016 Medicare Payment Adjustments and Attestation Deadlines
September 14, 2016
Written by Patty Kosednar
This information is for EPs and EHs participating in the Medicare EHR Incentive Program (meaningful use) only.
If 2016 is the first year you are participating in the Medicare meaningful use program, you will only need to report data for a 90-day period. However, if you want to avoid Medicare payment adjustments for CY2017, you will need to attest to meaningful use by October 1, 2016.
So if you are a clinic and have new providers, check to see if they have ever participated in MU before. If they have not participated, you will need to submit their MU attestation before October 1, 2016 to avoid Medicare penalties next year.
If you are a hospital new to the Medicare MU program, you will need to submit your 2016 MU attestations by October 1, 2016 to avoid Medicare penalties next year.
Below is information available on the EP and EH CMS 2016 MU tip sheets.
Payment Adjustments & Attestation Deadlines
- For the 2016 EHR reporting period, all returning participants must attest by February 28, 2017.
- New participants who successfully demonstrate meaningful use for 2016 and satisfy all other program requirements will avoid the payment adjustment in CY 2017 and CY 2018 if the EP/EH successfully attests by October 1, 2016 — and will avoid the payment adjustment in CY 2018 if the EP/EH successfully attests by February 28, 2017.
- Returning participants who successfully demonstrate meaningful use for this CY 2016 and satisfy all other program requirements will avoid the payment adjustment in CY 2018 if the EP/EH successfully attests by February 28, 2017.
